Roman Polanski
Roman Polanski was born in Paris in 1933, and his family moved to Poland when he was a child, where he survived the horrors of the Holocaust. After studying in Poland at the National Film School in Lodz, Polanski made a name for himself with his early films, including Knife in the Water (1962) and Repulsion (1965). He moved to America and directed the horror masterpiece Rosemary's Baby (1968). In 1969 Polanski's pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, was murdered by members of the Manson family. Polanski then made a bloody adaptation of Macbeth (1971) in England, and then returned to Hollywood to make one of the greatest American movies of all time in Chinatown (1974). In 1977, he fled to Paris after he was charged with unlawful sex with a minor, and he has since made critically acclaimed films in Europe including Frantic (1988) and The Pianist (2002).
