Paul Schrader
Paul Schrader is a screenwriter and director who rose to prominence in the film industry in the New Hollywood of the 1970s. Born in Michigan in 1946, he grew up in a strict Calvinist household and didn't see a film until he was 17 years old. He became a film critic under the auspices of Pauline Kael and moved to Los Angeles. He transitioned into screenwriting and wrote one of the all-time great screenplays for Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976). Schrader went on to write several other acclaimed films for Scorsese, including Raging Bull (1980) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). From the late 1970s throughout the 2000s, Schrader has been writing and directing his own films, including thought-provoking movies like Blue Collar (1978), American Gigolo (1980), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), Light Sleeper (1992), Affliction (1997), First Reformed (2017), and the list goes on. His films often deal with issues such as violence, addiction, and existential crises, and he does not shy away from exploring the darker aspects of the human psyche.
