Lewis Milestone
Lewis Milestone was a director whose work spanned several decades and genres, directing over 30 films between 1925 and 1962. Born in Ukraine in 1895, Milestone left for America when he turned 18 and served as a photographer during World War I, directing training films. After the war he made his way to Hollywood, eventually directing Arabian Knights (1927) and All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), both of which received Academy Awards for Best Director. In the early sound era, Milestone directed the great screwball comedy The Front Page (1931), which is in the public domain and available to watch for free. He would go on to direct dozens of popular films including Of Mice and Men (1939) based on Steinbeck's novella, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) starring Barbara Stanwyck, and the Rat Pack heist film Ocean's 11 (1960). He left behind a legacy of memorable films, many of which you can watch for free online and are featured here.
