The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) is a crowd-pleasing road trip comedy featuring three drag queens traveling by tour bus across Australia, from Sydney to perform in the city of Alice Springs in the middle of the continent. The movie succeeds mainly from the three strong performances by Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terence Stamp, who convincingly plays an aging and grieving transgender woman. Most of the humor and dramatic tension come from the culture clash of these three drag queens descending on small-town Australia. Despite the serious homophobia they face, the movie remains light and breezy as they encounter many adventures along the way. Director Stephan Elliott captures striking images of extravagant drag costumes set against the beautiful desert of the Australian Outback. Once the bus, which is named "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", finally reaches Alice Springs the three leads put on an amazing drag show to CeCe Peniston's song "Finally". The soundtrack overall is great with hits like "Go West" by the Village People and "Mamma Mia" by ABBA. It's a groundbreaking hit indie film that became a musical in 2006 and has become an LGBT cult classic.
