Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is a 2002 South Korean film directed by Park Chan-wook. It's the first installment in Park's acclaimed Vengeance Trilogy. Ryu (Shin Ha-kyun), a deaf-mute man, tries to secure a kidney transplant for his dying sister. When a black-market organ deal goes awry and he is swindled, Ryu and his anarchist girlfriend resort to kidnapping the daughter of a wealthy businessman to raise the money. The film was praised for its stylish direction, although some critics found it too gruesome.
