Mephisto is a 1981 Hungarian-German film directed by Istvan Szabo, based on Klaus Mann's novel. The story follows Hendrik Hofgen (Klaus Maria Brandauer), a German actor in the 1930s, whose thirst for fame leads him to compromise with the emerging Nazi regime. The film, drawing parallels with Faust's pact with the devil, explores the intersection of art, politics, and ambition. Mephisto won the 1982 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, marking the first Hungarian film to receive this honor.
