Movie Description

Ju Dou is a 1990 Chinese film directed by Zhang Yimou and Yang Fengliang. Set in 1920s rural China, the film tells the tragic story of a young woman, Ju Dou (Gong Li), who is sold into a loveless marriage to a wealthy but impotent dye mill owner, Jinshan (Li Wei). When Ju Dou starts an affair with her husband's nephew, Tianqing (Li Baotian), a forbidden love blossoms, leading to a series of tragic events. With its lush visual aesthetics and bold narrative, the movie brought international attention to the great Chinese director Zhang Yimou and was the first Chinese film to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
