Hard Eight is a 1996 American crime film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson in his feature directorial debut. It stars Philip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson. Originally titled Sydney, it was Anderson's first feature film, and was the expansion of the short film Cigarettes & Coffee. The main character of Sydney, was named after the previous one in Midnight Run. Hall, Walters, Reilly and Hoffman later appeared in Boogie Nights and Magnolia.
