Movie Description
Great Expectations is a 1946 British drama directed by David Lean, based on the classic novel by Charles Dickens. The story follows an orphan named Pip, from his humble beginnings being raised by his harsh sister and her kind husband, to Pip’s elevation to the status of a gentleman, funded by an unknown benefactor. As Pip grows, he becomes entangled with the enigmatic Miss Havisham and her beautiful but cold-hearted ward, Estella. The film beautifully captures the novel's themes of social class and the often crushing weight of one's own expectations. It's considered one of the finest adaptations of Dickens' work. It stars John Mills, Valerie Hobson, Francis L. Sullivan, Bernard Miles, Jean Simmons, Anthony Wager, Martita Hunt, Finlay Currie, and Alec Guinness.
