Forbidden Empire (also known as Viy) is a 2014 dark fantasy adventure film directed by Oleg Stepchenko. Based on the horror novella Viy by Nikolai Gogol, the film follows cartographer and scientist Jonathan Green (Jason Flemyng) as he embarks on a scientific journey from Europe to the East in the 18th century. His travels lead him to a remote Ukrainian village lost in the woods, where the inhabitants are plagued by fear due to the presence of evil spirits, dark magic, and horrifying creatures. As Green delves into the village's secrets, he must confront the monstrous entity Viy. The movie was a smash hit in Russia.
