Bandit Queen is a 1994 Indian biographical film directed by Shekhar Kapur. It's based on the life of Phoolan Devi, a woman belonging to a lower caste who faced severe poverty, child marriage, and brutal sexual abuse in her early years. After being wronged by her community, Phoolan takes the law into her own hands and transforms into a notorious gang leader and bandit who sought revenge and became a Robin Hood figure. Portrayed by Seema Biswas, Phoolan Devi's character is a symbol of both rebellion and retribution. This film's hard-hitting narrative and visceral depiction of caste discrimination and gender abuse in rural India make it a powerful viewing experience. The real Phoolan Devi gained fame after the release of the movie, but she did not approve of her portrayal and tried to have it banned.
