The Best Free Movie Streaming Websites That Are Safe & Legal
May 24, 2022
What are the best free movie streaming websites that are safe & legal? Here I'll highlight some of the best free movie sites that we link to on FreeGreatMovies.com. There are tons of free movie streaming sites out there, but a lot of them are illegal and sketchy with annoying ad pop ups that might leave you with a virus (especially if you're on a PC). So in this blog I'll highlight the very best free movie websites that are safe & legal. Most of them are ad-supported meaning they feature ads during the movie as you stream it usually every 15-20 minutes or so. And most of these services have apps on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and other popular streaming devices to make it easy to watch on your television.
1. YouTube - The site we link to the most for free movies on FreeGreatMovies.com is YouTube. We currently feature over 2,000 free great movies from YouTube from many different channels. In our previous blog post we highlighted the Best YouTube Channels for Watching Free Movies. Check out that post for channels that offer thousands of movies both in the public domain and that are licensed out from studios and distributors.
2. Tubi TV - Tubi TV is currently the best ad-supported movie streaming service out there. They're owned by FOX Entertainment and offer over 35,000 movies and TV shows! On FreeGreatMovies.com we currently feature about 1,000 of their best free movies on our site that we link to. They have movies from all the major movie studios along with many smaller distributors like Shout! Factory TV (which also has their own free movie streaming website). Like most streaming services the movie rights are always changing so if you see something you really want to watch, then check it out as soon as possible. They have many ways to browse their site, by category, popularity, and more. No sign up for Tubi TV is required which is cool. Pretty much every streaming device has a Tubi TV app available on it now.
3. Pluto TV - Pluto TV is another top ad-supported movie streaming service with thousands of on demand movies to choose from. They're operated by Paramount Streaming and feature movies from all the major studios (especially Paramount!) along with many smaller distributors. No sign up is required for Pluto TV. They have live TV channels which may be of interest, but on FreeGreatMovies.com we just link to their on demand offerings. Their web interface isn't quite as friendly as Tubi TV, so we usually link to Tubi TV when the movie is on both websites. Pluto TV also has apps for almost every streaming device out there.
4. Amazon Freevee - Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is the free ad-supported video on demand streaming service owned and operated by Amazon (who also owns the mega popular movie website IMDb.com in case you didn't know). You can find links to movies on Amazon Freevee on the IMDb website or on Amazon.com's Prime Video section. Unlike Amazon Prime movies, you don't need an Amazon Prime subscription to access movies on Amazon Freevee. You do need to have an Amazon account though and be logged in to watch movies on Amazon Freevee. Doing an advanced search on IMDb.com of Amazon Freevee offerings brings up over 6,500 movies, so there's a lot on there. I've found that the rights to their movies change frequently so if there's a popular movie you want to see, seize the day.
5. The Roku Channel - The Roku Channel is the ad-supported on demand streaming service from Roku, Inc. which is mainly known for their popular streaming devices. The Roku Channel has over 10,000 free movies and TV shows, along with some free live TV channels. They have an easy to use website that does not require sign up.
6. Plex TV - Plex offers an impressive library of ad-supported video on demand movie and TV content. The Plex app is available on most streaming devices, and their website watch.plex.tv is pretty easy to navigate as well. They claim to have over 50,000 on-demand movies and TV shows. Currently everything that is on the Crackle video streaming service and on the Popcornflix video streaming service are available on Plex as well. No sign up is required to watch movies on Plex's website or apps.
7. Peacock TV - Peacock is NBCUniversal's streaming service. While there is a premium version of Peacock that you have to pay for, you can sign up for a free account on their website and get access to over 500 ad-supported movies from Universal Studios.
8. Vudu - Vudu is a digital video store and streaming service owned by Fandango that offers about 10,000 free movies and TV episodes. They also offer movies and TV shows to rent, but if you go to their website Vudu.com and click "Free" up top you can see their free ad-supported offerings. They do require you to register on their site to watch free movies.
9. Crackle - I'll add Crackle to this list. I didn't used to link to Crackle from FreeGreatMovies.com because their website was really clunky, but they've since done a website overhaul and it's now usable. They used to be owned by Sony, but now they are owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. They have over 1,000 free ad-supported movies along with TV shows. Some good stuff. They've got apps for phones, tablets, and streaming devices.
So those are some of the very best free movie streaming websites that are safe & legal. We'll continue to add and alter this blog as free movie sites evolve. Enjoy thousands of free movies online with these great free movie websites!
